RAMPION WIND FARM

Witness the Mighty Wind Turbines!

Rampion Wind farm

The Rampion Wind Farm consists of 116 wind turbines installed in the English Channel, approximately 13 kilometres off the Sussex coast. The wind farm has a total capacity of 400 megawatts, making it a significant contributor to the generation of clean and renewable energy. The project aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable energy practices in the region.

Environmental impact

The Rampion Wind Farm directly combats fossil fuel pollution by providing a sustainable green energy alternative. The 400MW of installed electrical capacity will generate almost 1,400 gigawatt hours (GWh) of power output each year from a clean, renewable energy source. This is enough power to supply the equivalent of almost 350,000 UK homes each year for the lifetime of the project.

Wind Turbines

Wind turbines efficiently convert the kinetic energy of wind into electricity through a process that involves aerodynamics and electromagnetism. Aerodynamically designed blades capture the wind’s kinetic energy, causing them to spin. This rotational motion is then transferred to a gearbox, which increases the speed to an optimal level. Connected to the gearbox, a generator transforms the mechanical rotation into electrical energy through electromagnetic induction. The generated electricity is subsequently transmitted to the grid for distribution, providing a clean and sustainable source of power.

Aesthetic Experience

The experience of being among an offshore wind farm is aesthetically interesting because it blends the sleek, modern design of the turbines with the vast and natural beauty of the open sea. The towering structures create a unique visual contrast against the horizon, and as the blades rotate, they contribute to a dynamic and almost hypnotic pattern. The combination of industrial elements and the serene marine environment offers a distinctive and visually engaging scene. Additionally, the interplay of light and shadows on the water’s surface, along with the rhythmic hum of the turbines, enhances the overall sensory experience, creating a captivating fusion of technology and nature.

Economic Implications

The Rampion off shore wind farm has had a positive impact on local economies, creating employment opportunities and fostering skills development in the renewable energy sector.

The farm also has long-term benefits for consumers as the wind farm contributes to a diversified and affordable energy mix.

MARINE IMPACT

Prior to construction, surveys of birds, fish and shellfish, benthic and marine mammals were undertaken to identify the use of the area by marine life.

It was found that the Black Bream spawning at the Kingsmere Reef Marine Conservation Zone were particularly sensitive to noise during foundation piling, and therefore the piling activities during the most sensitive breeding season (from April to July) were stopped.

Piling noise can also impact on marine mammals so before any piling activities were started, specialised marine mammal observers were on site to look out for any animals in the sea near the piling activities. Piling is put on hold until the animals are no longer in the area.

Excellent Outdoor First Aid course I recently did the 2 day Outdoor First Aid course with Hatt. It was the 4th such course I have done for my MTA qualifications but the first with Hatt and it was by far the best one I have done. An experienced, informed and passionate instructor providing ample opportunities for questions and clarifications as well as realistic scenario based learning in the woods at Blacklands Farm. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a 2 day outdoor first aid course!

Abseil off Peacehaven Cliffs Hatt Adventures were brilliant! We were running a charity abseil event and Tom and Andy were so calm on the day and knew exactly what they were doing to help get our supporters abseiling down the cliffs. Some of our supporters were very nervous and the Hatt guys made them feel at ease. The event ran smoothly and we are delighted to have raised over £6,500 for our charity! Emma was also extremely helpful on the lead up to the abseil and helped us advertise our event on social media. A very positive experience- would highly recommend. Our supporters were keen to do future events for us and had nothing but good feedback for Hatt Adventures too!

Abseiling with Sam I am doing a charity abseil this month so last month thought I'd practise and booked into an abseil at Blacklands with Sam. From beginning to end he was supportive, encouraging and patient with all of our nerves, the others on the course were all fantastic and friendly, Sam created a real sense of camaraderie and I had an unforgettable day. Now I feel less terrified and am looking forward to abseiling down some cliffs in a few weeks time! Thank you Sam!

Outdoor First Aid Level 3 - work courses have never been this fun! I attended the two-day Level 3 ITC Outdoor First Aid course at Blackland Farm delivered by Hatt as required my our new roles. It was EXCELLENT. A good mix of theory and practical learning, we were straight into it after a quick briefing. The cohort was just small (just 5 of us plus Dai, our teacher) which really helped the learning experience as it meant that we could work together closely and our instructor could spend a lot of time with each of us to support our understanding. The scenario learning with constructed participatory first aid situations was a brilliant way to put all of our learning into practice. Dai, our instructor was super enthusiastic and clearly very experienced, as well as an excellent listener and supportive in his feedback. The company I work for hadn't used Hatt before, but I will be recommending to my managers that staff are sent to them for future outdoor courses. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait to receive my qualification certificate!
